Business Incubation

Evergreen seeks to assist locals to start, develop and run healthy businesses. We bring our expertise into the situation, work with the passion and skills of the locals, offer them training, and walk beside them as their business ventures are developed.  Potential business incubation projects must meet our incubation criteria:

•    There must be a viable business plan.
•    The plan must meet real needs in the local community.
•    Projects must include equipping of local staff.
•    The projects need to be locally sustainable.

Yellow Valley Cheese
BizInc-CheeseSmall-scale dairy farmers in China were struggling to make a living. Large milk processing companies were unbeatable competitors, causing smaller farmers to be unable to sell their milk. Thanks to a cheese making kit that one Evergreener received as a birthday gift, the idea arose to start a cheese-making project that would provide an avenue for the farmers to sell their milk. This would also provide additional employment in the area, providing stable incomes for families.

We began by training a local farmer's wife to become a cheese maker. About a year later, we realized this project had potential for expansion, so we planned a small scale trial project selling to the expat community. The cheese sold well, so we slowly continued expanding the project. Today, at least thirty rural households receive a better income due to this new company, and dairy farmers supplying the milk have seen an increase in their income of at least ten percent per year.

Swine Production
The area north of Taiyuan in Yangqu County is extremely arid, and the farmers there struggle, no matter how hard they work.  Local pigs are of poor quality and sell for a low price.

BizInc-PigsEvergreen’s pig-raising project aimed to assist these farmers.  We brought in young sows of higher quality and began breeding better pigs.  We worked with local farmers on breeding, daily management of the pigs, and rebuilding their pig pens.  Training sessions were set up for the entire village, including information about proper vaccinations and feed, but more importantly, introducing them to materials to help insulate the pens from the winter cold.  The farmers’ diligence paid off; their new breed of pigs not only sold at higher prices, but the butchers told them they would buy any pigs the farmers wanted to sell in the future.

After this success, Evergreen’s agricultural specialists then trained the locals in artificial insemination to further propagate this higher quality breed of pigs.  Evergreen pigs are now a staple in this area, and the business has been completely turned over to local management and ownership.

Evergreen Handcut Cards
BizInc-CardsThis Evergreen economic development project seeks to serve both urban and rural families needing extra income, as well as to touch them in a tangible way with the love of God. The ancient Chinese paper cutting art has been modified to appeal to the Western eye and is marketed in the West. Proceeds from the sale of these hand-cut cards are used to further develop this project, and to assist low income families in urban and rural areas through Evergreen’s scholarship and community center programs.
