Shanxi Evergreen Service's Consulting Services Team is a not-for-profit mediating structure standing between China and the Western world. As Westerners we understand Western culture and Western expectations; at the same time, our long-term residency in China enables us to akaiserweb1.jpg understand Chinese culture and Chinese expectations. Since we are the only long-term foreign consulting service in Shanxi, we are frequently approached by different foreign organizations to provide them with a basic understanding of Shanxi and her people. Out of these conversations have grown many different kinds of projects.

We are not an investment company. Nor are we a clearinghouse for other entities looking for a name under which to operate in Shanxi or in China. Rather, we are here to help all who are interested in benefiting the people of Shanxi to find success in this environment. We are also available to assist like-minded groups contemplating similar operations in other provinces. Since our personnel are varied, our projects cover a wide range of fields. Our sphere of operation is bound only by our purpose statement and we are always on the lookout for any opportunity to bring true peace, joy and prosperity to the common people of Shanxi.

Traditional Business Consulting

The Evergreen Consulting Team is available to assist Chinese firms seeking various kinds of contacts with overseas entities, as well as to advise foreign firms contemplating entry into the Chinese and Shanxi markets. We have arranged a number of China business and investment orientation trips for foreign investors and business professionals initiating them into the possibilities of doing business in Shanxi and in China. The guests are escorted through Beijing and Taiyuan with introductions provided to local and foreign contacts in business and relevant government bureaus.

We have also worked to bring modern environmental protection practices and technologies to Shanxi. In conjunction with the Shanxi Province Economic Trade Bureau, we arranged invitations for a dozen representatives from different companies and government branches in Shanxi to attend the California Energy Conference sponsored by the US Commerce Bureau in Beijing. On multiple occasions we have arranged for relevant foreign experts to visit Shanxi and present various technologies and projects to different companies and government branches.

National Publishing Industry

Because of our long-term interactions with different Chinese entities, the Evergreen Consulting Team has developed a multi-sided view of how publishing works in China. As foreign Christian professionals, we have paid particular attention to recent trends in religious publishing within China. Over the years, a number of large international publishing houses have been given introductions in this field. Along with developing contacts and general legal information, our research has included extensive cataloging of locally available materials, as well as investigations of the various translation options.

Military & Police Related Projects

Evergreen's emphasis on localization presents us with some unique opportunities. Over the past few years the Consulting Team has been involved in police and military projects to a degree quite unusual for foreigners working in China. On a number of occasions, we have arranged conferences for international police officers to present training courses to local and national leaders in China's Public Security Bureau. Topics varied from the specifics of "community policing," to more general issues of leadership and corruption prevention. To date, we have also arranged visas and itineraries for two different delegations of U.S. military cadets to engage in cultural exchange activities with Chinese military academies and various retired Chinese military officials.

Church Assistance Funds

As fellow Christians working in Shanxi, Evergreen is keenly aware of the needs of the local churches. Accordingly, the Consulting Team has established the Church Assistance Fund as a means to provide legal financial assistance to Shanxi churches in difficult circumstances. Projects vary widely from building repairs to gifts of clothing and food. All monies are given freely through legally authorized official church representatives with no conditions attached. The success of these projects is due largely to our long-term residence and the local trust it engenders.

Sports Exchanges

With the Olympics coming to China in 2008, there is great local interest in sport-related events. Over the last few years, the Evergreen Consulting Team has worked with the provincial sports commission to develop various levels of sports exchange between Shanxi and the outside world. A team of women from various American universities visited Shanxi for a series of soccer matches in 2000 and 2005, with a similar team from Shanxi visiting the United States the following year and again in the fall of 2005. We are currently discussing with local officials the establishment of a series of summer youth sports camps, and also investigating the possibility of holding international high school level sports tournaments in the Taiyuan area.

Educational Exchanges

Our contacts in the local communities enable us to find teaching opportunities for specialists in fields other than English teaching. While Consulting Team has at times made our own expertise available in classroom settings, in some cases we are able to provide short-term teaching opportunities for others as well. The opportunities and possibilities vary according to each candidate's skills and area of interest.

Historical Research

Given Evergreen's strong ties to Shanxi's past, it should come as no surprise that we seek to allow local history to inform our work as much as possible. Over the years, the Consulting Team has invested its energies in discovering what has been done in Shanxi by the foreign Christian professionals who have come before us. Taiyuan, in particular, is full of buildings and stories that have great bearing on how Evergreen operates in Shanxi today. This information is available for academic exchange, and can provide valuable background information for other foreigners considering similar work elsewhere in China
