Currently among the Evergreen expatriate families there are 20 children, most of whom are school-aged. To meet the unique needs of these "third culture kids" the Shanxi Evergreen International School was opened in 1998. The school provides education from kindergarten through eighth grade with each family then making their own choices for high school and higher education. SEIS follows an American curriculum carefully selected by our head teacher, Miss Edie Eager (a certified teacher in the US), and also includes the Chinese language as a core class. Locally available electives are also offered ranging from taiqiquan to Chinese cooking. The school is essentially a "one-room schoolhouse" with the elementary school children studying together and the middle school children studying together. The school is equipped with a small library and computer center.

The school is essential for our long-term work approach in China and the children form a dynamic part of the service we provide to the community. Each year the students select a project seeking to meet a need in their neighborhood. This last year they earned money from odd jobs to furnish a village one-room schoolhouse that was in great need of desks and chairs.
